Friendster was founded in 2002 by Jonathan Abrams in Mountain View, California. Abrams is a computer programmer. Its official launched date was March 22, 2002. It was funded with $12 million investment in 2003 by Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Benchmark Capital, and private investors originally. Google offered $30 million buyout in Friendster management but it was declined. It is backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, IDG Ventures, DAG Ventures and individual investors.

Friendster is a social networking website which allows users to contact other members, maintain contact with them and share online media and content. It is also a way for dating, discovering new events or hobbies, and share messages, photos comments and videos through their profiles with their distinctive accounts created online. In Sydney, Australia is where the headquarters of Friendster is found.

Globally, Friendster has over 90 million users and unique visitors of over 61 million. Based on web traffic, it belongs to the top 100 global website receiving approximately 19 billion page reviews a month.

In Asia 90% of Friendster traffic is where it comes from. Friendster dominates in Asia as the number one social networking online. Alexa listed top 10 countries accessing Friendster as of 7th of May 2009 which includes the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, the United States, Singapore, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia and India.
